What is the Google Toolbar?
The Google Toolbar is a free software application that can be downloaded from the Google Toolbar's download page. After it is installed, it lets the user perform common Google tasks such as searching, document translation, and checking a site's PageRank (very useful for web developers when they are exchanging links). It works on both Mozilla and Internet Explorer.
Why would I want to use the Google Toolbar instead of just going to Google directly?
It's often easier to look at information from the page that you are visitting as you're deciding on what your next search terms will be. While it is possible to operate a second browser window, it takes longer, and it's more hassle with a mouse. Also, a plain Google search won't give information about PageRank or let you instantly highlight keywords with the push of a button. The Google Toolbar also blocks unwanted popups.
Both a plain Google search and the Google toolbar will give you the same set of search results. The Google toolbar just lets you do more with them, and it can help keep unwanted software and popup windows off of your computer. A plain Google search will also have the Google toolbar's functionality as long as the Google toolbar is installed.
